Once upon a time there lived a man and his wife who had no children. Their biggest wish was to have a child. Then one day, the woman realized that she was going to have a baby.
One beautiful day,the woman was looking at the flowers and vegetables in their neighbor’s garden through the window and she saw some lettuces.‘I want to eat those lettuces or I’ll die’ she said. As time went by, the woman stopped eating and lost weight each day.Eventually her husband was so worried that he climbed up the wall of their neighbour’s garden and picked up a bunch of lettuces for his wife.No one in the neighborhood had the courage to enter that garden, because it belonged to a very strong and bad witch. The woman ate the lettuces quickly but

she wanted some more, so the following day the man climbed up the wall again, to bring more lettuces.However this time the witch was there waiting for him. ‘How dare you come into my garden and steal my lettuces?’she shouted at the man, angrily ‘You will pay for this!’ The man begged for forgiveness and told her about his wife and how much she wanted the lettuce.‘In that case,’ said the witch slowly,‘You may take as much lettuce as you like. But on one condition: You will give the baby to me on the day she is born.’ The man was very afraid of the witch and accepted her offer immediately. A few weeks later the baby was born. The witch came on the same day and took her away.
She called her Rapunzel, because the name of the lettuce that her mother wanted so much was called Rapunzel. The witch looked after the witch very well. When Rapunzel was twelve years old she was very beautiful.The witch took her to
the forest and locked her in a high tower. The tower had no stairs but it had only a small window at the top. Whenever the witch came to visit Rapunzel at the tower she shouted: ‘Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down the your golden hair!’ Rapunzel let down the braids of her hair and the witch climbed up the tower. This continued for many years.One day the King’s son went into the forest to hunt,and heard a the beautiful voice of a girl, singing . The King’s son started looking for the owner of this beautiful voice. Eventually he found the castle, but he couldn’t see any stairs. The prince was so mesmerized by the beautiful voice that he decided to wait and see how the witch climbed up the castle. The following evening he whispered under the tower the same words: ‘Rapunzel,Rapunzel, let down your golden hair!’ Rapunzel let down her hair and the prince climbed up the tower. First Rapunzel was afraid to see him, because only the witch visited her. But when the prince said ‘I heard your voice and fell in love with you’ Rapunzel calmed down.The prince said: ‘Will you please marry me?’ and Rapunzel said: ‘yes!’ There was a big problem though: how could Rapunzel escape from the tower? Rapunzel was a very clever girl and she had a clever idea.
‘Each time you come here bring with you a skein of silk, and we can weave a ladder with it,’ she said to the prince.The prince brought a skein of silk with him on his visits and everything went well.The witch didn’t realize anything until one day Rapunzel said: ‘Mother, why does the prince climb faster than you?’
The witch got very angry. ‘You wicked child!’she cried.
I locked you up here to protect you from the dangers of the world, and you deceived me! She grabbed a pair of scissors and cut Rapunzel’s hair. Then she send the poor girl into a faraway
desert. That night the witch stayed in the tower and waited for


the prince. When the prince arrived and cried: Rapunzel, Rapunzel,let down your hair to me. The prince climbed up the tower but he didn’t find his beautiful Rapunzel. Only the wicked witch was there. The prince was very upset. He leapt down from the tower. He did not die, but the thorns on the ground pierced his eyes and he went blind.


For many years the prince wandered quite blind around the forest. He ate only roots and berries and wept over the loss of his dear Rapunzel.One day, he came to the desert where he Rapunzel lived. He heard a beautiful voice.
He knew this was Rapunzel’s voice,and he ran towards the voice. When Rapunzel saw him she started crying. Two of her tears wetted his eyes and the prince started to see again. He took Rapunzel to his kingdom. They lived happily for a long time.
